A critique of Mastodon is not a vote for Twitter, it's an acknowledgement that this space is full of hard problems and that a naive, federated solution ultimately forces bad threat models on marginalized groups.

We should be designing protocols with those communities in mind. twitter.com/SarahJamieLewi…

You can't patch privacy, security and good trust models on top of a bad architecture.

Saying "we'll make users aware of the risks" is a cop-out.

I don't like Twitter's trust model. I could write a book on the harms centralization causes.

But trading that for another bad architecture which supports fewer threat models in worse ways is just not a good idea.

Just because an alternative exists doesn't make it defacto good.

Rushing to build on an alternative without understanding the long term, known, studied, impacts of the (federated) architecture on trust and security is like rushing to build a house with sand because you don't like the current stone castle.

I think we should build better systems, I think we can, but we need to think long and hard about the design of those systems, and how those designs may or may not perpetuate inequality, threat models and risks.
