Microsoft previews decentralized identity network based on blockchain agonistic protocol

Microsoft is previewing a decentralized identifier (DID) network running atop the Bitcoin blockchain, as part of its overall effort to develop a scalable DID network under a blockchain agnostic protocol, per a company blog post.

The decentralized identifier network, dabbed ION (Identity Overlay Network), is based on a protocol called Sidetree that can run on any blockchains. Sidetree is designed to tackle the scalability challenge DID networks face - regular public blockchains operate at just tens of transactions per second, which is "nowhere near the volume a world full of DIDs would demand," Microsoft senior program manager Daniel Buchner wrote in the blog post.
